Obituary of Mildred D. Smith

Mildred D. “Peg” Smith passed away on Sunday May 8, 2016 at the age of 101. Born Dec. 10, 1914 in Nova Scotia, Canada, she was the daughter of Thomas Vincent and Anna MacKenzie Denney. She was predeceased by Gerald V. “Jerry” Smith, her husband of 61 years and brother, T. Vincent Denney. A 1932 graduate of Buffalo’s Bennett High School, she attended Millard Fillmore College. Peg was a branch manager for Western Union Telegraph Co and lastly a medical secretary for Marvin Pleskow, M.D. She was a parishioner of St. Mary’s R.C. Church and a member of the Altar and Rosary Society and the Ladies of Charity. Peg was actively involved in the Niagara County Council for Older Adults, Dale Association, Newfane Golden Agers, The Book Club, Lockport Gardeners, Niagara Historical Society and Kenan Arts Council. She received several service awards from the City, County and The National Parent Teacher Assoc. Peg enjoyed her family, sewing, knitting, baking, gardening, cards and maintaining her home. Peg was the mother of Kathleen L. Kirchner of Webster, N.Y. and Vincent M. (Diana) Smith of East Amherst. She is survived by her beloved niece and caregiver, Christine A. Denney, four grandchildren, Willow A. Kirchner, Sarah (Sean) Ronan, Vincent T. Smith and Kristen (Gaurav) Singh and six great grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will celebrated on Friday at 10:00 AM in All Saints R.C. Parish, 76 Church St., Lockport. Memorials may be made to the Charity of One’s Choice.
