Obituary of Raymond J. Lee

Lee, Raymond J. of Lockport, NY passed away on Thursday August 16, 2012 in Eastern Niagara Hospital, Lockport. Born on October 29, 1917 in Lockport, he was the son of William H. and Elizabeth Gold Lee. He attended public schools in Lockport, graduated from ulver Military Academy and Brown University before he began his active duty. He transferred as an Ensign to the U.S. Naval Air Station in 1942, receiving his wings and Naval Aviator designation in 1943. He instructed primary flight at Bunker Hill Naval Station and was relieved from active duty in 1945. Ray became President of Lockport Felt Company in 1950 and retired after it was purchased by Carborundum in 1969. Ray served on numerous boards including the M&T Bank, YMCA, Lockport Town & Country Club, Tuscarora Club and Niagara County Mental Health. He was appointed to the New York State Athletic Commission by Gov. Rockefeller and served from 1962-1972. In 1974, Gov. Wilson appointed him to the New York State Power Authority. Ray was an active member of the Niagara County Republican Committee and delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1956, 1960 and 1964. In 1960, He was honored by the Disabled Veterans Association as man of the year. Ray loved to fly and had his pilots license until 1986. Other hobbies included golf, travel, hunting and fishing. He loved his home town and lived a full and colorful life. He will be fondly remembered by all. Husband of the late Diane Shardon Lee, he survived by his children, William H. Lee II of LA, Raeme (late Neil) Jalowiec of OH and Laurie (Paul Sharawara) lee of AZ; five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Friends may call Monday 10:00 AM 12:00 PM at Lange Funeral Home, Inc., 186 East Ave., Lockport, NY where funeral service will be held at 12:00 PM. Interment in Cold Springs Cemetery.
